The Bands

Junior Band

Conductor: Elen Owen (right)
Rehearsal time: 6.30pm - 7.30pm, every Tuesday during school term

The Band has run a Junior band (the "band bach") for a number of years as a starting point for many players and this has been very successful, with around 50% of the Senior band being products from this band. For a number of years, this was run by Sue Owen, a member of the Senior Band.

In 2000, the band was lucky enough to secure the services of Gavin Saynor, a Tuba player who had just returned to the area to work as a brass peripatetic teacher. Gavin's experience, enthusiasm and natural talent for encouraging pupils brought  the band on in leaps and bounds over the 4 years he was in charge.

And in 2006, another former band member returned to conduct the junior band as Owain Roberts, ex senior band, BT and Beaumaris Euphonium player returned from Manchester after completing his university studies in Manchester.

Until 2008, the band was lead by Bangor University student Leah Grebenar, once an Euphonium player with the senior band and also played for Deiniolen Band.

In 2009, the senior band's bass player Elen Owen took over the reigns of the junior band.

If you fancy taking up playing a brass instrument, regardless of your age, the junior band is the ideal place to 'get you lips in'.

Intermediate Band

Conductor: Patrick Rhimes
Rehearsal Times: 7.00pm - 8.30pm every Thursdays during school term

The Band recognized a need for a link between the Junior and Senior bands and so decided to form an Intermediate band. This started in August 2000 with senior band baritone player Sue Massey and membership has grown considerably. At the moment, there are over 20 young (and not so young!) very promising members and the band hopes that these will soon move on to the Senior band.

The band competed in various competition from 2002 onwards, including coming 2nd in the 2003 North Wales Rally's youth section.

Under Sue's leadership, the intermediate continued to develop players for the senior band, including nearly half of the current band. The intermediate band emphasises on playing for fun rather than prizes.

After Sue stepped down as conductor in May 2006 due to her re-locating to London, a big loss to the band, Rebecca Roberts took over the reigns of the Intermediate Band.

In September 2007, the senior's Sorpano player Phillip James took over the reigns with the help of other senior band members.

When Phil left the band for the RAF in 2008, the senior band's Principal Trombone players (as well as Violinist, Pianist, bagpipist, whistlist.....) Patrick Rhimes took over the overseeing of the intermediate band.

The Intermediates meet every Thursday night in the bandroom. For more information, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it the band.

Rehearsal time: 7.00pm - 9.00pm, every Monday and Friday

The current Senior Band has approx. 30 registered players, with the majority of these being in full time education, either at school or at the University of Wales, Bangor. The Senior band has been in existence for over 100 hundred years and compete in a number of local contests each year as well as performing in many Concerts, Fairs and Carnivals. This Band in the past has produced a number of Star players who have gone on to better things including Glyn Williams, the Principal Euphonium of the Fodens Band and Arfon Owen on Horn to Black Dyke, now at Grimethorpe.

The Senior Band is conducted by music teacher Chris Williams, who also plays cornet for local band Beaumaris.
